Our Mission
PFP Programs and ActivitiesCity of Poughkeepsie Main Street Farmers Market SponsorshipPFP sponsors the City of Poughkeepsie Main Street Farmers Market to help improve access to fresh, healthy food right in the heart of the city at Mural Park near the corner of Main and Market Streets. Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons and Food Stamps (EBT) are accepted at the market. The market operates June through October on Fridays from 10 am-3 pm and includes PFP, Kessman Farm, the Cooperative Extension Green Teen product, and other local products. City SeedsCity Seeds is a new project PFP launches in 2006 in collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension's Green Teen Program which involves youth ages 14-24 in growing food and seeds, participating in workshops on food and farming, and sharing their new knowledge and skills with the communities of Poughkeepsie and Beacon through community events, farmers market, involvement in local food policy issues, and community supported agriculture (CSA). CSACSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters – members make a commitment to support the farm throughout the season, and assume the risks and bounty of growing food along with the farmer. The farm provides, to the best of its ability, a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce each week throughout the growing season. CSA promotes a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it is grown and the people who grow it. Educational tours and eventsPFP educational tours provide an opportunity for students and community members to come to the farm to learn about food, farming, food justice and CSA. PFP Events planned for 2006 include a plant sale, open houses, spring and fall member meetings, a children's event, a community day event, how-to workshops and times for volunteers to help out on the farm. Food SharePFP donates between 10 and 20% of its produce to people in need, primarily through Dutchess Outreach, Hudson River Housing, and Grace Smith House. We also provide assistance for low income members of the community to participate in the CSA though our sponsored share program. A Brief HistoryThe Poughkeepsie Farm Project began in 1999. The first season, we had 70 members and cultivated three acres of reawakened farmland leased from Vassar College. We now grow enough vegetables for 240 members, for our booth at the Poughkeepsie Farmers’ Market, and for a weekly allotment to local soup kitchens and shelters. As the CSA has grown, so have our opportunities to share the farm with the community through our education and food justice work. Who is PFP? |
