Seed Saving

Cultivating community self-sufficiency

Creating a seed bank is the "kernel" of City Seeds. The seed bank is designed to revive local seed-saving skills and build local access to locally adapted seeds.

The City Seeds Garden

Throughout the spring and summer, City Seeds participants develop and care for the City Seeds Garden, where heirloom vegetable varieties are being grown out for the first generation of saved seed. Through educational programs and hands-on experience, the seed garden project inspires the application of botanical knowledge and gardening skills, as well as a sense of community self-sufficiency. In learning to save seeds from plants they have helped to grow, young people draw on the generative power of the earth to nurture the generative power of urban communities.

Passing on the Gift

In keeping with the philosophy Heifer International—a nonprofit organization whose goal is to help end world hunger and poverty through self-reliance and sustainability—part of City Seeds’ plan is a "pass-on" project. Seed packets will be given to project participants and to local gardeners and farmers who agree to then pass on seeds and seed saving knowledge to another person.
