Urban Farming and Gardening Programs

City Seeds offers a range of opportunities for young adults to build agricultural knowledge, community outreach experience, and leadership skills.

After School Program

As part of the Green Teen program, Poughkeepsie and Beacon high school students visit the Poughkeepsie Farm Project weekly in the spring and fall to engage in hands-on gardening and seed-saving lessons and activities.

Riverhaven Program

Youth living at Riverhaven, a short-term shelter for youth for run-away and homeless youth in Dutchess County, visit the farm each week throughout the growing season to discover and enjoy the farm ecosystem and produce.

Summer Program and Farm Internships

The Poughkeepsie Farm Project provides an innovative internship program combining hands-on farming with training in community food system advocacy and youth education. The interns work with each other, PFP staff, and PFP members in helping the farm project both grow food and facilitate learning.

Educational opportunities include weekly seminars, field trips, and participation in the Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT) program. In addition, interns gain training and experience in sustainable vegetable farming and youth education. We have both full-season and summer only internships available each year.

  • Green Teen Community Garden Community Food Project Interns: During a paid, six-week Summer Program, Green Teen hires sixteen youth from Poughkeepsie and Beacon to work 30 hours a week. These Community Food Project Summer Interns spend one day a week at the PFP each week to learn about the farm ecosystem, sustainable farming, and wider issue regarding food and farming through experiential lessons and farm projects. Youth also staff the City of Poughkeepsie Farmers' Market and Beacon Farmers’ Market, and share what they learn in community presentations and outreach.
  • Junior Internships: Green Teen graduates can apply for the PFP Junior Internship, a paid, 30 hour per week position. Junior Interns help with vegetable production on the farm, serve as mentors and team leaders for the Green Teen Summer Program, and also organizers for the City Seeds Community Meal. This internship is an opportunity for high school students to continue to learn and build agricultural and leadership skills.
  • Community Food Fellows: Community Food Fellows assume even more responsibility and involvement in the day-to-day work of urban farming, as part of an eleven week paid internship. Fellowsn may choose a focus for their work at the PFP, including farmers' market, education, or seed saving. Fellows play an important role as educators and mentors to the Green Teen participants and Junior Interns, as well as work closely with farmers, CSA members, and volunteers in the fields.
  • Full Season Farm Internships: The progression of opportunities for young adults at the PFP culminates in the Full-Season Farm Intern position, a paid position from May through November. The full-season intern is involved in all aspects of organic vegetable production, gains extensive farm training, and assumes significant leadership within the program. This position is designed for those interested in exploring community-based farming as a vocation.
