Farm Land Preservation Resources

  • American Farmland Trust (AFT), founded in 1980, works to stop the loss of productive farmland and to promote farming practices that lead to a healthy environment. Includes a newsletter, press releases, organizing tools and a Farm Land Library. AFT produces "Farming on the Edge", a nation-wide study of the farmland use in the U.S., key source for charting development pressures on farmland.
  • Land Stewardship Project, Minnesota-based non-profit organization that works to "keep people and the land together." Has a very useful newsletter, organizing and strategy information, policy updates, and more.
  • Land Trust Alliance, part of the private land conservation movement, promoting voluntary land conservation across the country and providing resources, leadership and training to the nation's 1,200-plus nonprofit, grassroots land trusts, helping them to protect important open spaces. Provides links to local land trust organizations.
  • The Land Trust Alliance Northeast Program (LTA/NE) has launched a major policy initiative - the Private Land Conservation Incentive Program - in New York State to persuade state legislators and the governor to create new incentives for private land conservation and to work with land trusts and other nonprofit organizations to increase state investment in conserving open space
