Anise Hyssop – Agastache foeniculum
Description: Bushy, Midwestern native, foliage and flowers permeate the air with sweet licorice fragrance. Used to make tea and known to attract beneficial insects. Tender perennial grown as an annual.
Growing Tips: Likes well-drained soil.
Spacing:12-18 inches
Height: 3 feet
Light: Full sun

Bee Balm (aka Wild Bergamot) - Monarda didyma
Description: Edible blooms are popular in perennial gardens. Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. Used in infusions to improve digestion. Native to eastern US.
Growing Tips: In shade its bloom time is lengthened.
Spacing: 8-12 inches
Height: 36-48 inches
Light: Full sun to part shade

Black Eyed Susan – Rudbeckia triloba
Description: Excellent and reliable cut flower that attracts pollinators to its showy blooms and birds to its ripe seedheads. Perennial.
Growing Tips: Tolerates average soil, drought once established
Spacing: 18-24”

Light: Full sun to part shade

Butterfly Weed – Asclepias tuberosa
Description: A native milkweed species that serves as a food source for monarch and queen butterflies. Showy orange flowers produce copious amounts of nectar, attracting many pollinators to the garden.
Growing Tips: Tolerant of arid, poor soils once established.
Spacing: 12-24”

Light: Full sun to part shade

Echinacea, Purple Coneflower – Echinacea purpurea
Description: An easy to grow coneflower with large, purple flowers and medicinal roots. Perennial, native.
Growing Tips: Roots reach harvestable size in 3-4 years.
Spacing: 12-24”

Light: Full sun, will tolerate partial shade

Echinacea, Coneflower, “Cheyenne Spirit” – Echinacea hybrida
Description: Award-winning perennial displays a vibrant color range, blooming late summer into fall. Deer resistant.
Growing Tips: Once established, water occasionally, more in extreme heat or containers.
Spacing: 8-12 inches
Height: 24-40 inches
Light: Full sun

Joe Pye Weed - Eutrochium purpureum
Late-blooming wildflower. Grows in upright clumps that reach several feet tall. Its thick stems have lance-shaped, serrated dark green leaves, and in midsummer tiny mauve flowers bloom in large clusters atop the stems. Flowers have a sweet vanilla scent and are especially attractive to butterflies and other pollinators.
Growing Tips: Transplant to garden in late spring, when threat of frost has passed
Spacing: 2-3 ft

Milkweed, Common - Asclepias syriaca
Description: A tall and conspicuous species that sometimes forms large clones. The umbels bear large balls of pink to purplish flowers that have an attractive odor.
Growing Tips: Needs ample sunlight. Save the dried seedpods in winter to sow and expand your milkweed plot in late spring

New York Aster - Aster novi-belgii
Description: Along with the goldenrods and native grasses, asters are the quintessential herbaceous fall color plants of North America. The flower heads consist of a ring of 20 or more purple or pink or occasionally white ray florets that surround a central cluster of yellow disc florets.
Growing Tips: Culture is easy in sunny sites with moist well drained soil. Plants may die out in the center if not decided periodically.

New York Ironweed - Vernonia noveboracensis
Description: New York ironweed is a tall, clump-forming perennial. Small flower heads occur in large, loosely branched, flat-topped, terminal clusters. Flowers are all of the disk type and deep reddish-purple in color.
Growing Tips: As a tall, narrow plant, it is suited for the back of the border or tight spaces. The flowers attract butterflies and seed heads attract birds.

Phlox, “Art Shades” – Phlox drummondii
Description: A reliable and fast-growing accent or border flower. Branched stems produce a multitude of multi-colored flowers.
Growing Tips: Plants may require support when flowering.

Rudbeckia, “Chim Chiminee” - Rudbeckia spp.
Description: Lots of genetic diversity in this mix of quilled rudbekia, with each ray flower rolled into a tube. Many hues of gold and cinnamon in a large variety of petal arrangements.
Growing Tips: Drought and heat tolerant. Deadhead for prolonged blooming

Sunflower, Woodland – Helianthus strumosus
Description: Perennial wild sunflower native to the North East. Blooms are yellow and 2-4in across. Branching
Growing Tips: Suitable for perennial garden. Does well in shade.

Yarrow, “Summer Berries Mix” - Achillea millefolium
Description: Flat-topped flower heads in shades of red, rust, beige, rose, yellow, apricot, and white. When dried, the color is retained.
Growing Tips: Low-maintenance.
Spacing: 12-24 inches

Light: Full sun
